Manasa sarovar
Manasa sarovar is a lake in the Himalayas which has been mentioned often in our ancient epics . Legend has it that the lake would appear to the visitor as he or she would have imagined it to be . This lake is considered to be a favorite of Lord Shiva and he would visit this area regularly with his consort Parvathi . The lake is a pilgrimage spot for devout Hindus.

The water birds enclosure in the zoo , which is a covered pond has been named the Manasa Sarovar.

Purple Heron

Purple Heron:

Scientific name : Ardea purpurea
Both sexes are alike and have slender necks. This lanky bird is slaty purple above with a long black crown and drooping crest.The rufous neck has a prominent black stripe along its length.
Voice: A harsh croak.
Range: All India south of Himalayan foothills.
Habitat: Open marshes, reed-covered lakes and riversides.

Painted Stork :

Scientific name : Mycteria leucocephala
Both sexes look alike.Plumage is white with blackish-green and white wings. It has a blackish-green breastband and black tail and has a rich rosy-pink wash on greater wing covers.The large slightly curved bill is orangish-yellow.
Food: Fish, frogs and crustaceans.
Voice: Characteristic mandible-clattering.
Range: From terai-south through the country's well watered regions.
Habitat: Inland marshes, jheels, occasionally riversides.

Scientific name : Threskiornis aethiopica
Both sexes are alike.The plumage is white and the head naked and black.The bill is long, curved and black. Blood-red patches can be seen on the under wing and flanks in flight.
Food: frogs, insects,fish,molluscs and algal matter.
Voice: loud booming call, nasal grunts during breeding season.
Range: A migratory bird found all over India, from terai south.
Habitat: marshes and riversides.
Barheaded goose:

Scientific name : Anser indicus
Both sexes are alike with two blackish strips on back of the white head.White stripes can be found down the necksides and the neck itself is dark brown in color.The black tipped bill and legs are yellow in color with a light grey plumage.
Food: tender shoots of gram, tubers and paddy.
Voice: nasal and musical honking.
Range: breeds only in Ladakh within Indian limits.It is a winter visitor to south and central India and east across Gangetic plains to Assam.It is rarely found south of Deccan.
Habitat: rivers and large jheels.
