Scientific name :Sarkidiornis melanotos
The male has white head and neck speckled black with a fleshy knob on top beak. Black back has purple-green gloss and greyish lover-back with white lower collar and underbody short black bars extended on sides of upper breast and flanks.Females are duller, smaller and lack the comb.
Food: shoots and seeds of water plants, grain aquatic insects, worms and frogs.
Voice:Loud goose-like honk when breeding.
Range: Almost all India and uncommon in extreme south and northwest India.
Habitat: Jheels and marshes surrounded by trees.

Scientific name : Amaurornis phoenicurus
Both sexes are alike. Forehead and sides of head is white and is dark slaty-grey above. It is silky white below and rufous on vent and under tail-coverts.
Food: Insects,Worms,molluscs and shoots of marsh plants.
Voice: A harsh krr..khwakkk... often at night.
Range: South from Himalayan foothills through the country.
Habitat: reed-covered marshes, ponds and tanks, monsoon cultivation and streams.

Scientific name: Porphyrio porphyrio
Both sexes alike with purplish-blue plumage and long red legs with oversized distinctive toes. The forehead has a patch of red and beak is thick red. The female has a smaller red patch.
Food: vegetablematter, seeds, tubers, paddy, insects, molluscs and small frogs.
Voice: A mix of cackling and hooting notes.
Range: Mostly resident to the south but found all through the country from about 1500 meters in Kashmir.
Habitat: vegetation and reed-covered jheels and tanks.
