Scientific name : Anser owser
Believed to be the ancestor of all Indian domestic breeds, is a common winter visitor.The grey rump and white nail to the fresh pink bill are the distinctive marks.
Food: Green shoots of winter crops such as wheat or gram.
Voice: A musical aang, aang.
Range: found in northern India and Assam in winter, rare in central India, found as far south as Karnataka
Habitat: young gram fields, sandbanks in the middle of large rivers and jheels.

Male is recognizable by its pink-brown white-speckled head, with conspicuous broad white eyebrows and bluish grey on wing and shoulders. The female is paler in colour.
Food: Largely vegetarian.
Range: Throughout India in winter.
Habitat: Grassy jheels.

Scientific name : Anasclypeata
The males head and neck are glossy dark green. With white breast and rest of under parts mostly chestnut. Pale blue on forewing, with a white bar between it and the metallic green speculum. The female has conspicuous bright orange bill and is mottled dark brown and buff. Broadened shovel-shaped bill and orange legs are distinctive in both the sexes.
Food: Largely animal matter.
Range: Winter visitor throughout India.
Habitat: Jheels,irrigation reservoirs and village tanks.
