Muntjac is a shy animal and often called in
the locale it lives as "The barking deer"
since it emulates the bark of a dog while on
the run. Instances have been reported of this
shy animal getting tamed. |

Muntiacus muntjak (Zimmerman).
Characters : The
antlers are small and are set on bony hair-covered pedicels
which extend down each side of the face as bony ridges.
In does tufts of bristly hair replace the horns. Old
males are browner in colour and the upper canines are
well developed and are used for self-defence. |

Habitat

Entire
Indian sub-continent with slight variations.
Habits : They live
in thickly wooded hills and come out to graze in the
outskirts of forests or in open clearings. They eat
various kinds of leaves and grasses and wild fruits.
They are seen singly or in pairs or in small family
parties. The call from a distance sounds much like the
bark of a dog and hence the name 'barking deer'. Muntjac
breed at all seasons. The young usually one, sometimes
two, are born at the beginning of the rains. Horns are
shed during May and June. |
